I am being considered as a finalist candidate for a position, and the H.R. department asked me for an official transcript, references, and submission to a criminal check. I submitted all requested documents last Tuesday.
How much time does it to complete a background check? Should I followup with them this week? Does the fact that background check is requested upon me a good thing? What is the purpose of the check and what do they want to know about me?
Thank you for answering my question.

IF they are doing a criminal check on you it means that they want to know everything about you. Usually when this is any kind of a school even a university they are checking for sex offenders. They will check all of your school references, the jobs that you have had and they will talk to those who wrote letters for you in reference to your character. This takes time and I wouldn’t talk to them this week. They are obviously not in a hurry. I understand that you are very anxious but you don’t want to push. Possibly a call next week would be in order.
I don’t know if you know this or not but, if you are applying for a job you are allowed to say to the people that you are applying that you don’t want them to talk to your present employer. Most people do this as they don’t want their present employer to know that they are looking for a job. Many are let go from their jobs if it is found out that they are looking elsewhere. All potential employers understand this and honor that request. It does not in any way have anything to do with whether or not you will get the job you are seeking. I wish you calm and patience!.
